Winter Silage Requirements for Cattle

From Farmipedia.ie
Jump to: navigation, search

Monthly Silage Consumption per Animal

Cows -- 1.4 tonnes per cow per month

Cattle 1 to 2 years -- 0.8 tonnes per head per month

Cattle 2 to 3 years -- 1.2 tonnes per head per month

Stock Bull -- 1.2 tonnes per head per month

Example:

5 months of winter feed is required for all stock except the 2-3 year old cattle, who require 3 months supply due to being wintered later and finished indoors.

60 No. cows @ 1.4 tonnes/ cow per month = 84 tonnes/month

1 No. bull @ 1.2 tonnes/bull per month = 1.2 tonnes/month

30 No. 2 - 3 year olds @ 1.2 = 36 tonnes/month

30 No. 1 - 2 year olds @ 0.8 = 24 tonnes/month

(109.2 x 5) + (36 x 3) = 654 tonnes

Since 1 hectare produces approx 20 tonnes, 654/20 = 33 Ha

Therefore 33 hectares of silage would need to be cut.
