Typical Farm Accidents
Farm chemicals:
If a container containing a hazardous chemical should fall then there is a chance that it could burst and any person in the vicinity could be splashed with the chemical. Many farm chemicals are acidic and can cause serious burns to the skin. In addition if it should it splash on the eyes, there is a serious risk of permanent damage to sight or even losing one’s sight.
Machinery:
If the brakes on tractor are poorly maintained it can lead to serious accidents if they should fail. Hazards include the tractor overturning, or loaded trailer could jack-knife. Either of these occurrences could result death or serious injury to the operator, and/or bystanders. If this was to happen while travelling on a public road, it could result in a serious traffic accident.
Disease causing organisms:
Dangerous spores can be present in poorly saved hay or rotting silage. These spores can be inhaled by a person and be very dangerous to health, as fungal infections etc. can occur in the lungs. This could lead to serious health problems or death of the infected person.
Buildings:
If a person was doing maintenance to a farm building, which involved accessing the roof of the building, then there is always the risk of a fall from a height. In addition if that preson should step on a plastic roof light by accident, the plastic would break and the person could fall through the roof light. Falls from heights can result in death or serious disabilities.
Animals:
Bulls are very dangerous animals which should never be trusted. Even the quietest bull can without warning attack, and can cause serious injuries or even death. Cows with calves can also get very aggressive if a person gets between them and their calf.
