Training Heifers to Cubicles

The most successful way to train heifers to cubicles is to start them young.

Some farmers actually get the new born heifer calves to lie in little miniature cubicles as week old calves.

Yearling heifers should be housed in a suitable cubicle house to ensure that they do not become accustomed to lying on the passageway or slats.

Maiden heifers should have access to a cubicle each. Cubicles should be a good modern design to reduce the chances of them getting stuck. Mats or mattresses are beneficial as they are more comfortable.

Methods used to encourage heifers (and cows) that won't lie in cubicles include:

  • Running automatic scrapers frequently

  • Placing tyres or gates on the ground thus making it more difficult for the animal to find a comfortable spot

  • Sprinkling meal on the cubicles to encourage heifers to walk into them

  • Using soft bedding such as straw or sawdust for the heifers
