Sustainable farming means operating a system of farming that does not lead to any negative environmental consequences occurring as a result of the farming operation.

Examples of sustainable farming practices would include:

  • Preventing soil erosion by avoiding severe poaching
  • Avoid spreading organic or chemical fertilisers too heavily or in the wrong conditions as this could lead to water pollution.
  • Maintain hedgerows in good condition.
  • Practicing techniques such as crop rotation to reduce the requirement for pesticides, fungicides and insecticides.
  • Retention of wildlife habitats, to provide an area for wildlife to flourish.
  • Disposing of waste chemicals and oils etc.
