Spreading Lime on Grassland
From Farmipedia.ie
Research has shown that the optimum time to spread lime on grassland is the spring. However one should note the following points.
- Urea should not be spread on land that received lime in the previous 6 to 8 months as the Urea would react with the lime on the surface and a lot of nitrogen would be lost to the atmosphere
- To best use slurry it should be spread a week before the lime is applied.
- Silage should not be cut from a field that has received lime in the previous 8 weeks as the lime would effect the proper fermentation of the grass in the pit.
- Lime is best applied to fields that have been cut for silage or grazed tightly as this removes the risk of the lime fouling the grass for the next grazing or cut of silage
- Where reseeding is being carried out, after spreading the lime, it should be worked into the soil using a harrow or Land Leveller before fertilizer is spread to ensure that the amount of contact between fertilizer granules and lime particles is minimised
