Learning to Arc Weld
A very useful addition to any Farm Workshop is an Arc Welder, as it can be used for both day to day repairs as well as fabrication.
The easiest and cheapest way to learn how to weld is to join a night class run in your local secondary school.
Here you will be part of a small class being taught by an experienced welder.
You will learn how to do all the typical welds that are used on a farm including:
- Butt
- Fillet
- Upwards
- Downwards
- Upside-Down
In addition you may be taught about Brazing
You will normally be given short lengths of steel each week and you will be shown the various types of welding as you weld these plates together.
You will need to practice at home and you should also working on very thin steel.
If you are learning at home, check the internet for some good guides (or buy a book) and practice by welding some small pieces of scrap metal together.
There are also some good sites on the internet with good information and videos, for example WeldingTipsAndTricks.com
