Listed below are some ways that new diseases get onto a farm:

  • Buying in or selling cattle. Some animals can be a carrier of a disease without showing any symptoms. If such an animal was introduced to a herd, the other animals could become quickly infected.

  • On the wheels of vehicles, e.g. Milk Truck or AI technician’s van which are going from farm to farm.

  • Carried by visitors going from farm to farm – on footwear.

  • On rodents, wildlife, dogs, etc. going from farm to farm.

  • Cows and in-calf heifers grazing on rough ground during the summer are at a particular risk of getting Summer Mastitis from flies.

  • Livestock should not be allowed to come into contact with other livestock on neighbouring farms
