Hazards to Children on a Typical Farm
On a typical farm there are many hazards to children. These hazards need to be eliminated.
Children should NEVER be left unattended on a farm for any length of time.
Some potential hazards are listed below along with a control measure.
Risk of drowning in the Slurry Pit
The pit should be securely fenced with a gate, and a lock should be fitted on the gate.
Risk of being attacked by the bull
The bull should be kept in a secure pen that a child could not enter.
Risk of falling from a ladder.
Ladders should be stored on their side in a locked shed.
Risk of ingesting a poisonous substance.
All medicines and chemicals should be stored in a secure location
Risk of a child starting the tractor.
The key should always be removed from the tractors when parked.
Risk of getting tetanus as a result of a cut.
Pieces of scrap metal lying around the farm yard need to be disposed of.
