- The road width is dependant on herd size, usually a minimum of 4m, up to 6m wide for very large herds.
- Make sure that the finished surface of the road is above the level of the surrounding ground to prevent ponding.
- The road surface should fall to one or both sides in order to have effective drainage. A fall of 1:25 is prefect.
- Topsoil should should be removed and at least 225mm of hardcore should be used. Normally 175mm of 75mm to 100mm broken stone topped with 50mm of screenings (50mm stone)
- The road should be surfaced with about 50mm of shale or sandstone dust.
- Have multiple access points from the roadway into paddocks to reduce poaching during periods of very wet weather.
- Consider a concrete roadway for sections close to the parlour that are used very frequently.
